Leopold Munyakazi who was extradited to Rwanda earlier this month on charges of committing Genocide against Tutsi in 1994, today told court that he will not respond to any questions if he is not recorded and his judges named.
Munyakazi denied his birth dates read to him by the court’s prosecutor saying that he was born in 1950 and not on January 1 1960 to Gerard Kanyamisambi and Agnes Nyirakabona in Kayenzi, Gitarama prefecture.
When he was asked whether he the real Leopold Munyakazi present in court, he stood up asking president of judges, “who are you.”
Munyakazi is accused of committing Genocide against Tutsi in 1994, accomplice in Genocide, mobilizing people to commit Genocide, murder as a crime against humanity and denying that Genocide took place in Rwanda.
He told court that he would need no lawyer and will stand for himself during the trial expected to take months and asked to be alerted of the laws allowed him in court.
“I see you want to even tell me what to answer you,” he told court in his nascent place.
Munyakazi who was a linguistic lecturer in Gouch University in the USA before his arrest and extradition to Rwanda for Genocide trail said that he wants all that he says be recorded because he had to correct a lot of scribbles in a written dossier which he had not signed yet.
He told court that his case can be used in research but did not specify which.
The court prosecution said that in fact Mukanyazi had not be given time to stand in its dock and would want to know why he was brought to the South Province court.
Therefore, court said, would not have time to first approve of his request to be recorded and prosecutors named.
I cannot talk to a person that disrespects me,” he told court when asked what he can say about the temporary arrest.
The National Public Prosecution Authority handed Mukanyazi to the police to be arrested temporary so that he prepares his dossier and trial takes place at the intermediate court.
The court’s prosecutor gave Gerturde Kamagaju, a victim, that had fled to his home and then was later tortured and killed after he handed him over to Gabriel Murekezi convicted of Genocide.
Munyakazi was during the Genocide an MDR supporter.
Prosecution said that Munyakazi went to Felicien Ugirashebuja, a headmaster at a primary, trying to kill him, they broke into his house they found he had fled but later died in another place.
Gabriel Murekezi as a witness of Munyakazi’s deeds during April 19-20 1994 said that he used to move around with him to hospital and that he saw him with a Kalashnikov gun. Murekezi added that Munyakazi was in charge of local security operations and was one of the main people that called locals to fight the enemy.
Munyakazi admitted that he had two guns including the Kalashnikov and the Masotera but insisted he did not use them to commit any crimes.
He said that court called him but lacked the esteem to even tell him who he is within that place.
Prosecution was told that it is falsely prosecuting him and warned that he would not be questioned without his lawyer.
